Story Symposium is a writing discussion group oriented around process, craft, and theory. We will approach writing from a variety of disciplines, such as narratology, philosophy, psychology, mythology, rhetoric, and poetics. Pooling our collective knowledge, we’ll build a resource taxonomy of everything storytelling entails.
This week we’ll be discussing Nietzsche’s essay “On Truth and Lying in an Extra-Moral Sense,” which looks at how the phenomenological world is constructed of metaphor.
Here’s a working schedule for the coming weeks:
8/13 LITERARY REALISM: “The Art of Fiction” – Henry James
8/20 SYMBOLISM: “On the Relation of Analytic Psychology to Poetry” – Carl Jung http://michaelbryson.net/teaching/eng298/Jung.pdf
8/27 STRUCTURE: Meander, Spiral, Explode – Jane Alison
Note that this is *not a critique group.* However, you can think of this as a writer’s support group where you can pose questions and seek help with story problems and prose difficulties. We may have days where we share small excerpts of our prose, or narrative outlines, to demonstrate problems and seek solutions.
