Plato’s Republic: Book IV

January 18 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

So we have reached Book 4. We’re still constructing the just city; many challenges lie ahead. Book 4 spends time discussing the unity and soul (most likely pre-socratic influence). The city is divided into three classes of people and four virtues: wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice. Please read the book prior to the meeting. The translations that we encourage/recommended are Bloom, Sachs, R E Allen and Reeve. We have a pdf of the latter – let us know if you need it by messaging below.

We intend to have a focused and text-centred discussion to stay on topic (namely the meaning and analysis of Plato’s work). After the 2-hours, discussion will generally open up.

This event will be at a private home. We look forward to you joining us in exploring Book IV.
