HOLY GRAIL SEARCH PARTY is a religious text discussion group—like a Bible study gone rogue—where we can engage in theological exegesis using whatever critical approaches suit us. Looking at sacred texts from various traditions, we’ll attempt to decode them for symbolic meaning and spiritual/psychological insight (putting aside religious dogma, cultural preconceptions, and absurd literalism). We may also explore secondary texts from various interpretive disciplines.
This week we’ll finish up with LUKE, along with the synoptic gospels generally (Matthew, Mark, Luke), paying particular attention to the crucifixion.
As an optional reading to inform our discussion, we’ll look at Sabina Spielrein’s concept of the death instinct in her 1912 essay “Destruction as the Cause of Coming Into Being,” which informed Freud’s concept of the death drive eight years later in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920). In it, she provides a psychological/theological interpretations of the crucifixion.

The week following we’ll continue with Acts of the Apostles (Luke-Acts being a singular narrative). Beyond that, most likely: Kings (1 & 2), John, and Revelation.
