Holy Grail Search Party – Genesis, Chapters 1–24

August 16 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

ASSIGNMENT: Chapters 1–24 of Genesis. We’ll pick up from the Tree of Knowledge, which was only around the third chapter. We may not make it past 11 (the end of the Noahic Covenant), but I want to assign sufficient reading. There’s also benefit in looking forward and applying what we learn retrospectively to earlier chapters since there is a lot of parallelism. We won’t rush, but we’ll try to remain focused and text-oriented.

Is God dead? Let us find out…

Holy Grail Search Party is a religious text discussion group—like a Bible study gone rogue—where we can engage in our own theological exegesis, using whatever critical approaches suit us. Meetings will take place Sunday mornings on Zoom.

We’ll look at sacred texts from various traditions, considering their historical context as well as their lasting significance. Putting aside religious dogma, cultural preconceptions, and absurd literalism, we’ll decode for symbolic meaning and spiritual insight. We’ll likely also explore secondary texts from different interpretive disciplines to guide our discussion.

We’ll begin with the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. We recommend the King James Version for consistency, particularly an annotated edition such as the Norton Critical Edition, although we may also compare passages from different translations.
