Continuing with Exodus, we’ll resume with the ten plagues leading to the ten commandments, beginning with the question of how exactly God is hardening Pharaoh’s heart, and for what purpose.
Assignment for Sunday: continue reading what you can of Exodus, ideally all of it (skimming through divine law and tabernacle instructions if it grows too tedious, although there’s a lot to say). Finish it if you can, although there will likely be at least one more Exodus discussion following this one, with *perhaps* a general discussion on the Pentateuch/Torah after Exodus (that is, Genesis through Deuteronomy).
Holy Grail Search Party is a religious text discussion group—like a Bible study gone rogue—where we can engage in our own theological exegesis, using whatever critical approaches suit us. Meetings will take place Sunday mornings on Zoom.
We’ll look at sacred texts from various traditions, considering their historical context as well as their lasting significance. Putting aside religious dogma, cultural preconceptions, and absurd literalism, we’ll decode for symbolic meaning and spiritual insight. We’ll likely also explore secondary texts from different interpretive disciplines to guide our discussion.
We’ll begin with the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. We recommend the King James Version for consistency, particularly an annotated edition such as the Norton Critical Edition, although we may also compare passages from different translations.
