This lecture is about Denmark’s world renowned storyteller, Karen Blixen, better known by her pseudonym Isak Dinesen. We will look at the many sources Blixen draw from for her art, including her celebrated compatriot writers Soren Kierkegaard and Hans Christian Andersen. From the heroic fatalism Nordic myth of the Ragnarök (“the twilight of the gods”) to the origins of existentialism and anxiety of the modern age. Rather than revolt against fate, Blixen’s tales show us characters who embrace destiny, in all its irony and poignancy.
