Traditional Publishing: Choosing the Right Publishing House for the Journey to Publishing

Your manuscript is at its best possible form and in its last draft. You’ve created an online presence and have sought after editors. Now, you’re ready to submit to publishing houses. But, which one? And, will you need an agent? There are many different options when it comes to seeking out publication for your manuscript. Authors can choose between small presses, the Big Five, and even nonprofit houses. It all depends on your individual goals for your book, the audience and readership you desire, how much you’d like to be involved with the process, and more. Small and nonprofit presses allow for a stronger and more one-on-one basis with their authors, which allows the author to be more involved. The Big Five (Hachette, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, MacMillan, and HarperCollins) have a large staff and budget so the majority of their work is done in-house, and the author may not be involved in every decision. Depending on where you see yourself in your manuscript’s process can dictate where you send submissions.

Self-Publishing: An Up and Coming Outlet in the Journey to Publishing

Ultimately, you’ve decided that you’d like to manage the publication process for your manuscript. After weighing your options, traditional publishing just simply didn’t feel right. And, that’s okay! Self-publishing has become an epidemic in today’s industry, and it’s another great way to publish your book. The self-publishing route has several different outlets for bringing your book to life. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Archway Publishing are a few of the self-publishing options available. As a self-published author, you’ll be able to make every final decision for your book’s completion and be involved the entire way. Freelancers become a major part of your book’s success, and depending which outlet you publish with, there may be additional tools you can utilize in production.

Marketing: Outreach and Publicity Efforts on the Journey to Publishing

You’ve chosen your preferred method for publication. Your publication date has been set. Now, it’s time to market your book and gain a stronger following and readership to promote sales. Marketing is one of the most important and crucial stages in the publishing process as it promotes and drives book sales. This portion of the process is done before and after the book launch and often coincides with publicity efforts. A book marketer will begin to draft press releases and campaign documents, build a press and media kit, send review requests, and prepare an advanced reader’s copy to highlight the upcoming book release. A marketer’s job is to draw in readers and to promote the availability of the book. A publicist becomes involved in the marketing process closer to the publication date, as well as after. The publicist’s job tends to focus more on building the author’s credibility and brand by planning and coordinating the launch event, readings, signings, and book tour.
