We'll be discussing the conditions that led to the Harlem Renaissance and the spirit of this literary movement. To do so, we'll be utilizing three resources:

2) "The African American Roots of Modernism" by James Smethurst. Please email ThePeoplesColloquiumPDX@gmail.com for a .pdf copy of this book. It's a collection of essays detailing different aspects of the time period between Reconstruction and the arising of the Harlem Renaissance. Please read those essays that are of most interest to you.
3) "The Souls of Black Folk," by W. E. B. DuBois - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/408/408-h/408-h.htm.
The goal of this discussion is to all around increase awareness, so feel free to read or explore other resources in preparation for the discussion, and come prepared to share what you've learned.
